kab-uh-RAY (n.)
So just what is “cabaret”? Google the word and you’ll quickly discover that outside of New York City (and perhaps small sections of Boston, Chicago and LA), “cabaret” is the euphemism applied to the kind of clubs where patrons stuff dollar bills into performers’ undies. (Or elsewhere.)
Technically, that does fit the definitions supplied by Mr. Webster’s dictionary - “a: a club serving liquor and providing entertainment (as by singers or dancers): NIGHTCLUB; b: the show provided at a cabaret.” But, with all due respect to Diablo Cody, that is not what I mean when I use the term. Although if I thought it could pay for the band and a decent publicist, I might consider it.
