Other Than Life

Does your iPod talk to you?

Mostly, my iPod is set to “shuffle songs,” and I have a pretty eclectic mix of music - everything from show tunes to cabaret to The Cliks - so I never know what’s going to come out when I press “Play.” And sometimes, I swear, my iPod sends me messages from the Universe. I’m not kidding.

It happened twice on Saturday. I had been up really late on Friday, doing this self-empowerment/sales workshop, and I had to get up really early on Saturday to go back for the next session. But despite not getting my full beauty sleep, I was kind of happy because I felt like perhaps if I abandoned my normal, too-cool-to-be-enthusiastic frame of mind, I might actually make some improvements in my life. And then my iPod started playing “Let the Sunshine In” from Hair - the Actors Fund concert version. (I highly recommend the whole disc. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Harvey Fierstein croak out the anti-pollution song “Air” and Lea Delaria does an awesome job with “Donna.”)

On my way home that evening, I stopped at a Starbucks for a little pick-me-up and ended up doing something I’d always thought I was too scared to do - making a sales pitch. The barista was incredibly receptive (you can read more about it here, if you like), and when I left, my iPod played “Something’s Coming” from the West Side Story original cast album: “Can it be? Yes, it could! Something’s coming, something good.” I just started to laugh.
